About Gidan Makama Museum
Housed in a meticulously preserved 15th-century Hausa royal compound, Gidan Makama is one of Nigeria's finest museums and one of its most beautiful buildings. The collection documents the full sweep of Kano's history — from the ancient Hausa city-states through the Fulani jihad of 1804, the colonial period and independence — with artefacts, textiles, musical instruments and ceremonial objects that reveal the sophistication of a civilisation too often underrepresented in global narratives of African history. The architecture alone, with its geometric mud-brick patterns and cool interior courtyards, justifies the visit.
