Iva Valley Coal Mine
About Iva Valley Coal Mine
Enugu — the "Coal City" — owes its very existence to this mine. The Iva Valley Colliery was the site of the 1949 Iva Valley massacre, when British colonial soldiers opened fire on striking miners, killing 21 workers in an event that galvanised the Nigerian independence movement. The site is both a place of historical tragedy and industrial heritage, and visiting it offers a sobering and essential window into the price paid for Nigeria's freedom.
