About Jos National Museum & Monument
The Jos National Museum is one of Nigeria's most important cultural institutions and the best single place to understand the Nok civilisation — a sophisticated Iron Age culture that flourished on the Jos Plateau between 1500 BC and 500 AD and produced the earliest known sub-Saharan African terracotta sculpture. The Nok figures, with their distinctively stylised faces, abstract forms and high technical quality, established a tradition of figurative art that influenced West African sculpture for two millennia. The museum's collection also includes artefacts from across Nigeria's major cultural traditions, and the attached open-air museum of traditional architecture is a fascinating walk-through of Nigeria's diverse building heritage.
