Known as the "Food Basket of the Nation," Benue's fertile plains along the Benue and Katsina-Ala rivers produce yam, sorghum and soybeans that feed much of Nigeria. Makurdi, the capital, is a riverside city with a rich Tiv and Idoma cultural scene.
