Ancient Benin Moat (Iya)
About Ancient Benin Moat (Iya)
The ancient earthworks of Benin City — the Iya — are among the most remarkable feats of pre-industrial construction in human history. When completed, the network of walls and moats surrounding Benin City was the world's largest earthwork, stretching over 16,000 kilometres in total length and enclosing 6,500 square kilometres — four times the length of the Great Wall of China and built entirely without machinery. The sections still visible in Benin City today are a fragmentary but powerful reminder of the engineering ambition of the Benin Kingdom at its height.
