Oba's Palace Benin City
About Oba's Palace Benin City
The Oba's Palace is the seat of one of the oldest continuously existing monarchies in the world. The Oba of Benin — a divine king whose lineage stretches back to the 13th century — still holds court in a palace complex that has stood on the same ground for over 700 years. The palace is the heart of Benin's extraordinary artistic tradition, the source of the celebrated Benin Bronzes (many of which were looted to European museums in 1897 and remain there today), and a living institution where ancient rituals and royal protocol continue with remarkable vitality. The annual Igue Festival, held in December, opens the palace to public celebration with a display of pomp and cultural pride that is unlike anything else in Nigeria.

This is the kind of place that makes you proud to be Nigerian. Brilliant experience overall. A definite highlight of my Nigeria trip.
