About Kano Ancient City Walls
The ancient walls of Kano — the Ganuwar Kano — were built over a thousand years ago to protect the city and stretch for 14 kilometres around the old city perimeter. Originally standing over 10 metres high, significant sections of the walls still stand today, constructed from compressed mud and remarkable for both their scale and their longevity. Walking the sections near Kofar Nassarawa or Kofar Wambai, you are tracing the outline of a city that was a major civilisational centre when most European cities were still villages. It is one of Nigeria's most underappreciated historical monuments.
