About Kofar Mata Dye Pits
The Kofar Mata Dye Pits are among the most photographed and most visceral historical sites in Nigeria. These ancient indigo dyeing pits — some over 500 years old — are still in daily use by Kano's artisan dyers, who work the fabric in deep stone vats of natural dye the same way their ancestors did centuries ago. The blues, purples and blacks of the freshly dyed cloth spread out to dry under the Kano sun create a scene of extraordinary colour, and the whole operation carries the weight of a craft tradition that pre-dates most European industrial textile production.
