About Kurmi Market Kano
Kurmi Market is one of the oldest and largest traditional markets in Africa — a trading hub that has operated continuously since the 15th century and once served as the commercial heart of trans-Saharan trade routes connecting West Africa to North Africa and the Mediterranean. Today it still trades in leather goods, fabrics, spices, crafts, and practically everything else in a labyrinthine network of stalls and workshops that has changed remarkably little over centuries. The leather tanners in the nearby Kofar Mata dye pits, visible from an upper floor of an adjacent building, are one of the most visually stunning traditional craft operations left anywhere in the world.
